Sandy Beach Earth Day Celebration 2007

B.E.A.C.H. celebrated Earth Day on 22nd April 2007 by organizing a beach clean-up and litter prevention campaign (focusing on cigarette butt litter) at Sandy Beach. Thanks so much to the 130 volunteers including TransPacific College students (who were working on the Presidential Service awards) who collected 40 bags of rubbish and 5228 cigarette butts.

Thanks to Jamba Juice and Starbucks who provided refreshments for the volunteers and thanks to Kale's Natural Foods who provided bottled water and prizes for the drawing. Thank you to Ben & Jerry's, GreenSaks, and Hawai`i State Bodysurfing Association for donating prizes. Thank you to Hawai`i State Representatives Gene Ward and Lyla Berg, and Special Assistant to the Mayor, Isaac Hokama for giving inspirational talks at the event.

Volunteers passed out BUTTsOUT "butt holders" to smokers 18 yrs. and older to help reduce cigarette butt litter on the beach. Smokers who received a "butt holder" were asked to partipate in a short survey and follow-up later. A follow-up clean-up took place on April 28 and showed that the campaign had been successful in reducing cigarette butt litter.
